Prescription Charges

Most adults in England have to pay prescription charges. Some items are always free, including contraceptives and some prescriptions are free depending on the medical condition the patient has. Some people are eligible for free NHS prescriptions if they receive certain benefits but this is not always the case, for example, someone on Universal Credits may think they are eligible for free NHS prescriptions but this is dependant on their income, if they earn over £935 they may not be eligible, the penalty for wrongly claiming free NHS prescriptions is currently £100+ the cost of the prescription(s).

You can check your eligibility here on the UK Government website.

The current prescription charge is £9.65 per item

A Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) could save you money on NHS prescription costs:

A 3 month PPC costs £31.25

a 12 month PPC costs £111.60

This means if you’re going to buy 4 or more prescriptions in 3 months or 12 or more prescriptions in 12 months, it may be cheaper to buy a PPC.

You can buy a NHS PPC here from the NHS website.

NHS HRT Prepayment Prescription

If you pay for NHS prescribed HRT medicine 3 or more times in 12 months, an HRT PPC could save you money.

Each item on an NHS prescription usually costs £9.65. You can buy an HRT PPC for a one-off payment of £19.30 (the cost of two single items).

The HRT PPC covers an unlimited number of certain HRT medicines for 12 months, regardless of why they are prescribed.

The HRT PPC does not cover all HRT medicines. Check if it covers your HRT medicine.

If your HRT medicine is not covered, or you also get prescriptions for items other than HRT medicine, you may save more with a 3 or 12 month PPC as described above.

Before buying an HRT PPC, check if you’re entitled to free NHS prescriptions and other help with health costs using our eligibility checker.
